Does Your Hospital Staff Need Interpreter Training?

Qualifying your staff lets you leverage the bilingual skills of your existing workforce rather than hiring outside interpreters. However, medical interpretation requires specific knowledge. Many self-identified bilingual staff members do not satisfy the minimum requirements to work as a healthcare interprets.

The Affordable Care Act requires that a qualified medical interpreter must:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in both English and at least one other spoken language
  • Effectively interpret specialized vocabulary or terms
  • Adhere to generally accepted interpreter ethics principles, including client confidentiality

Untrained interpreters can also put patients at risk: a study showed that instances of communication errors of clinical consequences increased by 83% when using untrained interpreters.

That’s why we designed our 40-Hour Medical Interpreter Training to help you bilingual team members gain the specific skills they need to work as qualified interpreters in a healthcare setting.
